The oak-panelled setting of historic Toynbee Hall provided the venue for the 2024 Datactics Summit, which this year carried a theme of ‘Data-Driven Return on Investment.’

Attendees gathered for guest speaker slots covering:

  • Danske Bank UK’s Lyndsay Shields presenting a ‘Data Management Playbook’ covering the experiences of beginning with a regulatory-driven change for FSCS compliance, through to broader internal evangelisation on the benefits of better data;
  • Datactics’ own data engineer, Eugene Coakley, in a lively discussion on the data driving sport, drawing from his past career as a professional athlete and Olympic rower with Team Ireland;
  • and Renfrewshire HSCP’s Bobby McClung explaining how automation and the saving of person-hours or even days in data remediation was having a material impact on the level of care the organsation is now able to deliver to citizens making use of its critical services.

The Datactics Customer Awards in full

In recent months, the team at Datactics has worked to identify notable achievements in data in the past year. Matt Flenley, Head of Marketing at Datactics, presented each with a specific citation, quoted below.

Data Culture Champion of the Year – Lyndsay Shields, Danske Bank UK

“We’re delighted to be presenting Lyndsay with this award. As one of our longest-standing customers, Lyndsay has worked tirelessly to embed a positive data culture at Danske Bank UK. Her work in driving the data team has helped inform and guide data policy at group level, bringing up the standard of data management across Danske Bank.

“Today’s launch of the Playbook serves to showcase the work Lyndsay and her team have put into driving the culture at Danske Bank UK, and the wider culture across Danske Bank.”

Data-Driven Social Impact Award – Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership

“RBC Brewin Dolphin undertook a holistic data review towards the end of 2023, culminating in a set of proposals to create a rationalised data quality estate. The firm twinned data this strategy with technology innovation including being early adopters of ADQ from Datactics. They overcame some sizeable hurdles, notably supporting Datactics in our early stages of deployment. Their commitment to being an ambitious, creative partner makes them stand out.

“At Datactics we’re delighted to be giving the team this award and would also like to thank them for being exemplars of patience in the way they have worked with us this year in particular.”

Datactics Award for Partner of the Year – Solidatus
Partner of the Year award graphic

“Solidatus and Datactics have been partnered for the last two years but it’s really in 2023-2024 that this partnership took off.

“Ever since we jointly supported Maybank, in Malaysia, in their data quality and data lineage programme, we have worked together on joint bids and supported one another in helping customers choose the ‘best of breed’ option in procuring data management technology. We look forward to our next engagements!”

Datactics Data Champion of the Year – NHSBSA
Data Champion of the Year Award graphic

“For all the efforts Tony, Nick and team have made to spread the word about doing more with data, we’d like to recognize NHS Business Services Authority with our Datactics Data Champion of the Year award.

“As well as their advocacy for our platform, applying it to identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiencies across the NHS, the team has regularly presented their work to other Government departments and acted as a reference client on multiple occasions. Their continued commitment to the centrality of data as a business resource is why they’re our final champions this year, the Datactics Data Champion 2024.”

Chloe O’Kane, Project Manager at Datactics, recently spoke at techUK’s Security and Public Safety SME Forum, which included a panel discussion featuring speakers from member companies of techUK’s National Security and JES programs. The forum provided an excellent opportunity to initiate conversations and planning for the future among its members.

Chloe O'Kane, Project Manager at Datactics

Read Chloe’s Q&A from the panel session, ‘Challenges and opportunities facing SMEs in the security and public safety sectors’, below:

What made you want to join the forum?

For starters, techUK is always a pleasure to work with – my colleagues and I at Datactics have several contacts at techUK that we speak with regularly and it’s clear that they care about the work they’re doing. It never feels like a courtesy call – you always come away with valuable actions to follow up on. Having had such positive experiences with techUK before, I felt encouraged to join the Security and Public Safety SME forum. Being a part of the Security and Public Safety SME Forum is exciting- you’re in a room full of like-minded people who want to make a difference.

What are your main hopes and expectations from the forum?

I’ve previously participated in techUK events where senior stakeholders from government departments have led open and honest conversations about gaps in their knowledge. It’s refreshing to see them hold their hands up and say ‘We need help and we want to hear from SMEs’.

I think it would be great to see more of this in the Security and Public Safety SME forum, with people not being afraid to ask for help and demonstrating a desire to make a change.

What are, in your opinion, the main challenges faced by the SME community in the security and public safety sectors?

One of the challenges we face as SMEs is that we have to be deliberate about the work we do. We might see an opportunity that we know we’re a good fit for, but before we can commit, we need to think about it more than just ‘do we fit the technical criteria?’ We need to think about how it’s going to affect wider aspects of the company – Do we have sufficient staffing? Do they need security clearance? What is the delivery timeline?

If we aren’t being intentional, we risk disrupting our current way of working. We have a loyal and happy customer base and an excellent team of engineers, developers, and PMs to manage and support them, but even if a brilliant data quality deal lands on our desk, if it would take an army to deliver it, we may not be able to commit the same resources that a big consultancy firm can and, ultimately, we may have to pass on it.

Moreover, our expertise lies specifically in data quality. As a leading DQ vendor, we excel in this area. However, if a project requires both data quality and additional data management services, we may not be the most suitable candidate, despite being the best at delivering the data quality component.

What are your top 3 areas of focus that the forum should address?

Ultimately, I think the goal of this forum should be steered by asking the question ‘How do we make people feel safe’?

A big challenge is always going to be striking the balance between tackling the issues that affect people’s safety, whilst navigating those bigger ‘headline’ stories that can have a lasting effect on the public. For instance, if you google ‘Is the UK a safe place to live?’, largely speaking the answers will say that ‘yes, the UK is a very safe place to live’. However, people’s perceptions don’t always align with that. I remember reading an article last year about how public trust in police has fallen to the lowest levels ever, so I think that would be a good place to start.

From a member’s perspective though, more selfishly, I’d like to get the following out of the forum –

  • Access to more SME opportunities
  • Greater partnership opportunities
  • More insights into procurement and access to the market
In your opinion, why is networking and collaboration so important? Have you any success stories to share?

Our biggest success in networking and collaboration is having so many customers willing to endorse us and share our joint achievements.

We focus on understanding our customers, learning how they use our product, and listening to their likes and dislikes. This feedback shapes our roadmap and shows customers how much we value their input. This approach not only creates satisfied customers, but also turns them into advocates for our product. They mention us at conferences, in speeches, and in reference requests, and even help other customers with their data management strategies.

For us, networking is about more than just making new contacts; it’s about helping our customers connect and build relationships. Our customers’ advocacy is incredibly valuable because prospective customers like to hear success stories from them, perhaps more than salespeople.

CYBERUK 2023 in Belfast ICC

Meet Datactics at CYBERUK 2023 at the ICC in Belfast, right across from our own Head Quarters!

CYBERUK 2023 is UK’s flagship cyber security event run by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). The theme this year is securing an open and resilient digital future. We face unprecedented growth in digital and technological development. This will bring huge benefits to society, but it also has the potential to threaten the national and economic security interests of the UK and other free and open societies.

The event will look to answer some of the most challenging questions facing the international cyber community today:

• What will cyberspace be like in ten years’ time?
• Will we be able to secure it so it remains free, open and democratic?
• Will we have nurtured and grown the talent needed?
• Will we have innovated and built the technologies that underpin our values?
• Will we have predicted and mitigated the risks and vulnerabilities?
• Will we be resilient to the threats?

And what will our counterparts in the future say to us if we don’t act now?

CYBERUK will examine how today’s cyber ecosystem – a sector worth £10 billion to the UK economy – can strengthen, join together and innovate to resist the threats, be ready for the opportunities and keep the UK the safest place to live and work online.

CYBERUK has a reputation for its energy, world-class content, engaging speakers and opportunities to connect.

While applications are closed, you can still join the discussion and watch key sessions on CYBERUK ONLINE, the event’s dedicated YouTube channel.

On the 23rd June, Matt Flenley visited the UK Ambassador’s Residence in Brussels as part of a delegation of UK tech firms to Belgium. Here, he recounts his pitch on Smart Cities from the event:

Data at the Heart of Smart Cities Brussels 2022

Hello and thank you for inviting us to take part in this session today. I am here representing Datactics, a Belfast-based software and services company specialising in AI-enabled data quality solutions.

Our platform is measuring and improving data quality in major global financial firms including ING in the Netherlands; and Neuberger Berman in New York, as well as to automatically classify and standardise crime reporting throughout the UK’s police forces in a major nationwide data quality improvement programme.

As a firm in software, we know our coffee! And I know that Belgium does too. For instance, I read in my preparation that the Port of Antwerp is the world’s largest coffee handler, typically stocking enough coffee beans at any one time to make at least six cups for every human being on the planet. Or to keep Dave and our DevOps team going for about six months.

You might be like me, the kind of person who needs those six cups to really get the day going! In the UK, the coffee brand Costa ran a campaign recently to show the amazing things people had planned for later in their day… such as this guy, who was getting ready to show off his truly amazing new trousers… but first, they’d need a coffee. And that coffee would be Costa.

For us, it’s the same thing with smart cities and data. There are so many exciting initiatives in the Smart Cities ecosystem which are the equivalent of those fantastic gold trousers, but unless they’re built on good data, it’ll be like trying to start your day without a coffee. Definitely do your exciting initiatives, but first, Datactics.

This mission has been named “Data at the Heart of Smart Cities”, and this is why I’m delighted to have been invited to take part today.

The big dreams of smart cities need big data to be delivered. And performing analytics on that data requires a huge amount of standardisation and cleaning, a task often left to data scientists.

That’s why at Datactics we like to say – don’t build your smart city on dumb data!

Take for example the recent announcement of the Climate Neutrality project, an exciting venture for the four cities in Belgium selected by the European Commission. The ability to measure the reduction of CO2, mitigating factors and innovations applied to achieve climate neutrality will ultimately come down to a lot of data – across buildings, energy, transport, waste management and investment plans.

The Smart City organisers will have to be able to measure that the data is valid, complete, timely, unique or not duplicated, consistent and accurate. These are standard definitions of data quality that the Datactics platform is pre-configured to measure and report.

Our software connects, typically via API or JSON file, to a wide array of old data silos and systems as well as more modern platforms. We profile, cleanse, standardise and de-duplicate data, and measure it to those industry dimensions I mentioned before.

It’s all performed in a no-code environment, aimed to support non-coders, at data scientists rather than at coders, and integrates with dashboarding systems like Microsoft’s PowerBI to help business users understand where data is failing, how to fix it, and then connecting into our remediation clinic to fix the broken data elements.

Then through embedding AI in our platform, we can suggest rules that might apply to data elements based on what’s in the data itself.

The platform can handle data in any context, as long as it’s structured or semi-structured.

Typically, we’re installed within a client’s private cloud, rather than being offered as software-as-a-service. This is usually down to the type of data being collected and used and aiding compliance with data protection regulations.

In this instance, we would work with the municipal authorities to sit across the data stores and sources and provide a consistent, standardised view of all data enabling analytics, data preparation for AI and ML, for a wide range of smart cities use cases.

We’re already working in the UK public sector on crime reporting and in supply chain procurement for the National Health Service.

We’d welcome the opportunity to explore your smart city initiatives, and see how we can become your indispensable partner for your data quality and smart cities ambitions.

But first, Datactics.

Thank you.

And for more from Datactics, find us on Linkedin or Twitter.

Security & Policing, the official Government global security event, returns as a live event for its 40th anniversary between 15‐17 March 2022 at the Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre.

Hosted by the Home Office’s Joint Security & Resilience Centre (JSaRC), the 2022 event promises to be our most content-rich and feature-packed show yet. Focussed on providing innovative and integrated ways to deliver security solutions across government, industry, and academia, Security & Policing will once again offer a world‐class opportunity to meet, network, and discuss the latest advances in delivering national security and resilience with UK suppliers, UK Government officials and senior decision-makers across law enforcement and security from the UK and overseas.

We have been present at The Official UK Government Global Security Event for the last two years and we are planning on being there this year too!

We are looking forward to sharing our data quality tooling designed with people, entity, and asset data automation in mind.

It will also be brilliant to be back in-person to catch up with everyone in this space.

We are delighted to be involved with AI Con this year again. This year, Courtney Lewis, Presales Engineer, and Daniel Browne, Machine Learning Engineer will be discussing Machine Learning Augmentation.

The north’s premier conference on artificial intelligence, AI Con returns to face-to-face business this year with a hybrid event on Friday 3 December.

As the adoption of AI expands into all areas of our lives, and the business and societal opportunities and challenges become ever more apparent, this ground-breaking conference addresses core issues of the technology for a range of audiences: general, business and specialist.

The event, which is now in its third year, brings together world-leading technology professionals and business leaders to examine how AI is changing our world and the opportunities and challenges that presents.

In-person attendance will take place at Titanic Belfast and will feature some of the top figures in the field, with other leading professionals streaming in from across the globe.

The themes from this year’s event, which hosted 450 attendees in its first year and 800 at the virtual event last year, include:

– Applied AI: Targeted primarily at a general audience, Applied AI looks at existing, mature technology that can be deployed today and examines case studies on where these are adding value and inspiration for people and their organisations to start their own AI investigations.

Chaired by Kathryn Harkin of Allstate NI, Rachael Bland of Kainos, and Sam Beni of Tech Nation

– Business of AI: Designed for a business audience, Business of AI looks at how AI can challenge existing business models, create entirely new ones and debates what “AI Startups” need to know in this burgeoning space.

Chaired by Alexandra Mousavizadeh of Tortoise Media and Tom Gray of Kainos.

Attendees are asked to note that strict Covid precautions will be in operation at the in-person event which will be limited to 200 people. Attendees must be double vaccinated and proof of vaccination will be required for entry.

The full programme is available online here.

london, in-person, events

Datactics CEO Stuart Harvey, Head of Business Development UK Julian Wavell, and Head of Sales Kieran Seaward will be attending Corinium Data and Analytics Metro in London this Thursday, 7th September.

With new roller banners ready to go and booklets just off the printer, we are ready to meet up in person once again!

Before the event kicks off on Thursday, we thought we would sit down and chat with Julian about the long-awaited return to in-person events, how in-person networking helps to drive conversations, and why Datactics decided to become involved with this event for the first time.

Hi Julian, what are you most looking forward to about the normality of in-person events?

The ability to meet someone in person and have a conversation is a completely different experience from talking to someone online. This is something that in my opinion we should strive to get back to. It is great that both event management companies and ultimately customers are making those steps forward to bring us back into a new normal. Corinium have told us they’re expecting anything from 80-100 attendees to this event and we really welcome that level of commitment from our clients, partners and other vendors alike. After such a prolonged period of virtual engagements, I think there is going to be momentum around physical events as people will appreciate them now more than ever before.

Why did Datactics decide to become involved with this event?

It’s one of the first, if not the first data and analytics event of its type to take place in-person, so we jumped at the chance to take part. We are extremely excited to be meeting customers in person, to learn more about their challenges around Data and in turn share stories from some of our projects in the Data Quality space. Only when we speak to customers can we gauge how our product can improve and develop to fully meet ever-changing customer needs and demands. We are also hoping to also gain awareness on what the key pain points are for our customers and what the key topics of conversations are within the space. Furthermore, there is a great opportunity to build commercial awareness of our product offering.

How does in-person networking help to drive conversations?

Trust and integrity are important to building relationships for customers and vendors which experience has shown is best achieved through conversations face to face. We also fully appreciate the opportunities to develop synergies with other organisations and seek out new partnerships.

We are looking forward to sharing our new fresh collateral which will convey how leveraging Datactics will empower business users to rapidly measure, match, report, and fix data assets, delivering true continuous data quality. Feel free to visit our stand and talk data with us.
We can’t wait to be back talking data again!

Thanks Julian! Julian joined the Datactics team 4 months ago to help build on strong growth for Datactics in the London financial services sector. You can reach out to him here

His appointment comes as Datactics has now grown to nearly 60, securing international clients in New York and Amsterdam during the past 12 months, alongside a £2m investment round secured in April 2021.
