Datactics won the A-Team Innovation award for the creation of Rapid Match, a system which allowed financial analysts to understand the geographical allocation of financial loans made by UK government during the 2020/21 Covid crisis augmented with a breakdown of industry type.

Datactics was selected and funded by Innovate UK to investigate the use of its self-service platform to solve a challenge for information analysts: How does an organization reduce time in wrangling data to make it fit for good quality analytics? The firm has reported that it has been regularly asked this question by clients spending too much time on manual preparation of data and seeing little return on investment (ROI) for their efforts.

The Datactics solution focused on challenges associated with data preparation when an organisation seeks to create rapid data analytics but is faced with disparate data sources, (often stored in different formats), siloed information and poor underlying data quality.

Summary of business benefits of the Datactics solution:

  • Addresses data quality and matching at scale challenges associated with joining large amounts of messy, incomplete data in varying formats, from a multiple sources.
  • Provide a reliable ‘match engine’ allowing government and organisations to accurately and securely integrate diverse sources of data.
  • Automated and reproducible platform to ingest, cleanse and match and update datasets for downstream analysis.
  • Provides systematic, reproducible pipelines to address time consuming data quality, preparation and matching tasks to produce complete, high quality and timely data for decision making.

Datactics’ Head of Software Development, Dr Fiona Browne, who led the project said,

“We were very aware that Companies House information is used in almost every KYC/AML system in the UK and we wanted to develop automated techniques for improving the quality of this information and to make it easy to ingest and to query. I’m glad to say that we achieved this ambition through building systematic, reproducible data quality pipelines that address time consuming tasks such as data wrangling and matching. We are augmenting our early work by looking at applications of machine learning and network analysis in this space for downstream tasks such as fraud detection and onboarding which are underpinned by data quality. ”

Read more from Dr Browne on how Datactics demonstrates rapid matching capabilities on open datasets.

In detail: How it works

The system extracted information from multiple financial and geographical data sources and used automated data pipelines for preparing, scrubbing and matching multiple data types before presenting the data in a very easy to query dashboard. These pipelines are systematic and re-producible enabling the process to be re-run when datasets are updated, or new datasets added.

The process is transparent for auditability. Furthermore, the process provides a reliable ‘match engine’ allowing organisations to accurately and securely integrate diverse sources of data. A particular focus of the project was on using UK Companies House as a master source relating to company name/address validation and understanding the relationship between companies and their owners. A view of the resulting analytical dashboard is presented in Figure 1 below.

Stuart Harvey, CEO of Datactics commented:

“Ultimately we wanted to prove that it was possible to create an easy-to-use solution in which a data team can address time-consuming data quality, preparation and matching tasks in order to create complete, high quality and timely data for decision making.

Rapid Match took advantage of existing strengths in the Datactics’ platform and added benefits from machine learning. We addressed data quality and matching at scale – joining large sets of messy data in varying formats from multiple sources. We implemented a reliable ‘match engine’ which allowed for fuzzy matching from these diverse sources. We made use of data op’s automation to ingest, clean and match data with minimum human input.

A key part of the challenge in building Rapid Match was seamless integration with Companies House information as a trusted data source. Companies House data is used in almost every KYC and AML process involving UK entities. It contains over 4 million companies updating information on 500,000 of these per year. Since it’s a fairly raw source of open data and many end users have significant challenges with data quality. The Datactics’ solution provided easy access to clean Companies House data via REST API and we used sophisticated network analysis to understand the relationship between companies and their owners.

We are grateful to Innovate UK for their support of this work and we’d welcome further opportunities to collaborate with clients or partners if our recent work in this area is of interest to you”.

Angela Wilbraham, CEO of the A-Team Group, who hosted the A-Team Innovation Awards 2022, commented,

“Our A-Team Innovation Awards 2022 celebrate and reward those companies at the forefront of innovation within our industry. We congratulate Datactics in winning the Most innovative data quality initiative award in recognition of their excellence in driving forward progress in capital markets capabilities.”

Data Management Solution for Sell-Side Regulatory Compliance

Datactics has won ‘Best Data Management Solution for Sell-Side Regulatory Compliance’ at the  RegTech Insight Awards USA – 2021.

The RegTech Insight Awards USA recognise established solution providers and innovative newcomers, celebrating RegTech solutions that have successfully improved firms’ ability to respond to the evolving and increasingly complex regulatory requirements across the global financial services industry.

The awards are designed to celebrate RegTech providers who are developing new and innovate solutions for their clients, in order to overcome a wide range of regulatory challenges, with a specific focus on Data Management, Trading Technology, RegTech and ESG suppliers. Nominations are invited from across the industry for consideration by the A-Team’s advisory panel and team of editors.

Head of Sales, Kieran Seaward said,

“We are delighted to have won this award, particularly during a time where regulatory compliance has never been greater in light of the Pandemic. The regulatory reporting landscape is growing increasingly complex and demanding across the global financial services sector. In our experience, clients benefit from developing robust data management programmes from the ground up, in order to adapt and comply with changing regulations and standards.

“Our solution takes the headache out of being able to measure and report on emerging and specific regulations, with its no-code functionality and pre-built rules for regulations including IFRS 9 and BCBS 239 for financial services.

“We would like to thank our clients and A-Team’s readers for voting for us as we continue to innovate and deploy new market solutions to our wealth and asset management customers”

Datactics UK Government Department Case Study

Datactics is partnering with a UK Government Department and national law enforcement agencies on a nationwide deployment of the Datactics’ data quality and matching platform for use in crime classification and reporting.

The main benefits of the system to date have been:

➡A reduction of manual processing and data preparation time. Increased accuracy of matching a crime report to the correct crime type, saving up to 90% of time spent manually reviewing data in crime records.

➡Additionally, data analysts who are not programmers are now enabled to selfserve for data quality, developing and maintaining data quality and match rules, without the need for costly and time-consuming IT development resource.

➡A robust national data quality framework in a secure cloud architecture allowing for multiple use cases to be delivered in a scalable and repeatable way.

Friday is here again! After a busy last 2 weeks, we are excited to tell you all our developments that have been happening over the past fortnight.

Datactics unveiled new dedicated Client Services hub

Last week we released press for the opening of our new office which marked the latest chapter in Datactics’ rapid growth story, following hot on the heels of our recent £2m investment round led by Par Equity.

We were delighted Simon Hamilton, CEO of Belfast Chamber of Commerce, was in attendance to open our latest office. In 2016, we were a 10-strong software firm that had just moved out of the Titanic Quarter’s Science Park. Now numbering nearly 60 employees, we have experienced growth on strong financial performance, which has seen us rank as the 17th fastest growing tech firm in Deloitte Ireland’s Fast50 in 2020.

“Northern Ireland has become an internationally recognised FinTech and RegTech centre of excellence, and we are glad to be working together as a team and growing our staff numbers. We are seeing benefits for our clients and staff as we collaborate and share in the extended and more spacious office”, said Datactics CEO, Stuart Harvey.

Invest NI video has been released

Last year we put in applications for Invest Northern Ireland’s Graduate to Export programme because the prospect of getting someone on the ground in both APAC and NY came along at just the right time for how Datactics is growing.

Michael Lynch, Business Development Executive (APAC) and Matthew Flenley, Head of Marketing both discuss the programme in the below video from both the employee and the employer’s perspective.

They both did a stellar job.

If you are a company considering Graduate to Export, we would definitely recommend speaking with Majella if you’re exploring this for 2022.

We attended a US Branding workshop with GBBC

Last week we had the pleasure of joining a GBBC Workshop on the topic of ‘Branding your company in the US’. The session was led by Theobald Fox and centered around key tips for companies to consider in terms of branding and clarifying value proposition in relation to the US market.

For Datactics, this event was particularly relevant as Datactics is seeking to further expand into the US Market. As part of Invest Northern Ireland’s ‘Graduate to Export’ programme, Brendan McCarthy will travel to the United States later this year to represent Datactics in the region. We attended this workshop to gain insight into US branding trends, ‘Marketing Must Do’s’, creating a US value proposition and messaging, and common pitfalls to avoid.

We caught up with Jenna Lloyd, US Partner at Theobald Fox and we asked her what she thinks are the biggest roadblocks that UK-based companies face coming over to the US…   Read the full round-up here.

Brendan McCarthy speaks at recent DIT event

Brendan McCarthy attended the Department for International Trade’s (DIT) ‘Landing a Successful Bank-FinTech Partnership in the US’  event which took place last week.

As part of Invest Northern Ireland’s ‘Graduate to Export’ programme, Brendan will travel to the United States later this year to represent Datactics in the region.

“My role in-market will help drive  Datactics’ international expansion plans by sourcing new business and potential partnerships within North America. This webinar offered advice for scaling tech companies growing in the United States and the necessary steps to take when forming new partnerships with banks and other financial institutions. Belfast, London, New York, Tokyo, 30th March 2021

Datactics is delighted to announce that it has secured a further accolade for the quality of its technology, this time from Bloor Research.

Datactics Self-Service Data Quality (SSDQ) has been awarded the Platinum Mutable Award in the 2021 Report. The award recognises software vendors that enable their clients to deal with data management processes in an intelligent and business-focused way.

Daniel Howard, Senior Analyst (Information Management and DevOps) with Bloor Research said:

“Datactics is a self-service data quality platform that puts significant stock in, and devotes substantial functionality to, the idea of explainable AI and machine learning. As fervent proponents of explainability in AI, we certainly approve.”

Explaining the typical client use case for its technology and services Datactics CEO (Stuart Harvey) said:

SSDQ allows client subject matter experts to measure, identify and fix data for themselves rather than being reliant on already over-stretched IT teams. As a data quality engine, Datactics co-exists with data governance tools relating to lineage and meta-data. We support our clients in automating data improvement processes that de-duplicate information and leverage the benefits of human-in-the-loop AI to reduce manual effort and improve accuracy

Datactics Round up

Welcome back to our round up. We thought we would take a bit of time to update you on what we have achieved and some important news about being accepted onto Government purchasing frameworks.

The first of which is G-Cloud. This framework enables suppliers of cloud-based solutions to be made available through a front-end catalogue called the Digital Marketplace.

In this round up, we are delighted that Datactics has once again maintained its place in the G-Cloud framework, alongside other highly prolific companies who are selling or thinking about selling their cloud-based solutions to the UK Government.

G-Cloud, Datactics, G-Cloud Supplier

Secondly, we have been included onto the Digital Outcomes and Specialist Framework, which sits alongside G-Cloud on the Digital Marketplace.

The DOS framework is for the procurement of digital teams or individuals, often alongside in-house delivery teams.  There are many benefits to being a supplier on this framework as DOS provides another route to market for suppliers looking to support digital transformation programmes across the whole of the public sector.

Thirdly, Datactics has achieved the Cyber Essentials certification.

Cyber Essentials Certification, Certified, Cyber Security

Cyber Essentials is a UK Government-backed scheme that aims to assist organisations with assessing and mitigating risks from common cybersecurity threats to their IT systems.

We are proud to have achieved this certification, as it demonstrates our commitment to helping identify security controls for an organisation to have in place with their IT systems.

The badge will ensure better identification of potential risks, that will help protect us against common cyber threats, illustrating how we have adopted the proper security controls to protect customer data and showcasing compliance with UK Government contracts. You can read more about it here and you can find us on the list of approved companies here.

Best Data Quality Analysis Tool
Matt Flenley, Marketing & Partnerships Manager, with DMI’s Award for Best Data Quality Analysis Tool

In other news, we also are delighted thatthe development and delivery work we’ve been doing on Self-Service Data Quality saw us selected as winners by the A-Team Group of their Best Data Quality Analysis Tool. Additionally, we ranked #17 in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Ireland, which highlights our innovation and rapid growth in the region.

These successes are an indicator of how much Datactics is growing. Our committed staff have worked hard to achieve these notable accolades. Particular thanks to those innovative folks who strive to put so many hours of development work into our Self-Service Data Quality platform. It has been a busy period, and certainly, 2021 has well and truly kicked off on a strong note!

Awards 2020

New York, Amsterdam, London, Belfast, December 4th 2020

Datactics has won the Data Quality Analysis Tool award from A-Team Group for the second year running, closing out a successful 2020 for the Belfast-based software firm which added three major Tier 1 financial clients in New York, Amsterdam and London.

Stuart Harvey, CEO at Datactics, was delighted to win the title:

We see this award as a thumbs up for the technology and the team. We are seeing strong growth in a demand for self-service technology in relation to data quality. This approach means that broken data is rapidly identified and returned to data stewards for review or automatic remediation. Datactics is now a crucial part of our clients’ data automation workflow and showing a strong return on investment.

Angela Wilbraham, CEO of the A-Team Group, who hosted the Data Management Insight Awards 2020, commented:

Our awards recognise leading providers of data management solutions, services and consultancy to capital markets and Datactics has proven themselves to be worthy winners of this prestigious title. We congratulate Datactics winning the Best Quality Analysis Tool in recognition for the continuing excellence in the data management space.

The final word goes to Kieran Seaward, Head of Sales at Datactics:

We’re delighted to be ending the year on a high. We’ve met the challenge of 2020 head on, securing three major clients in Europe, the UK and the USA on some of their biggest data management programmes to date. As we shared at the recent Data Management Summit, one real-world success story was demonstrated by a client of ours in the UK.

Using our platform, their non-technical data specialists were able to reduce the time taken to build and deploy a data quality solution from three weeks to under three hours, greatly speeding up their scenario planning as part of COVID-19 preparations. We’d love to thank all at A-Team and the judging panel for their hard work and look forward to working with them next year.”

Matt Flenley heads up Marketing at Datactics.

This is great news, because the firms we see listed alongside us are all involved in pretty cutting-edge projects which all help to make the financial industry more transparent and protect consumers and markets. It’s extremely rewarding to achieve the status of being recognised as innovators in this sector, by designing solutions that put regulatory technology in the hands of business, risk and compliance specialists. Thanks to all at RegTech Analyst and Fintech Global for their work in compiling the list from all the applications.

About the RegTech 100

The 2021 RegTech100 is launched today by specialist research firm RegTech Analyst.

The prestigious list recognizes the world’s most innovative technology solution providers that address the challenges of dealing with regulatory pressures within financial services.

The RegTech (regulatory technology) industry has experienced huge growth in the last few years as banks and financial institutions grapple with the unrelenting pace of regulatory change across all jurisdictions. Over $5bn has been invested in RegTech companies so far in 2020, according to data published by RegTech Analyst, as the compliance challenges have only been exacerbated by the shift to remote work during Covid-19.

As a result, this year’s process to identify the 100 RegTech innovation leaders was more competitive than ever. A panel of analysts and industry experts voted from a longlist of over 1,000 companies produced by RegTech Analyst. Sixty-two new companies entered the RegTech100 for 2021 and the finalists were recognized for their innovative use of technology to solve a significant industry problem, or to generate efficiency improvements across the compliance function.

RegTech Analyst director of research Mariyan Dimitrov said, “Banks and other financial institutions need to be aware of the latest RegTech innovation in the market in order to avoid new compliance risks and stay competitive despite new regulations around customer onboarding and remote communication post Covid-19. The RegTech100 list helps senior management filter through all the vendors in the market by highlighting the leading companies in sectors such as identity verification, risk management, communications monitoring, information security and reporting.”

A full list of the RegTech100 can be found at www.RegTech100.com. More detailed information about the companies is available to download for free on the website.

Belfast, London, New York, 10th September 2020

We are delighted to formally announce that Mick Foster, COO at Datactics, has won the Employee Engagement award at the Goodacre Systems in the City Awards (SITC).

sitc

These annual awards reward the leading service and system suppliers to the regulated financial community, particularly in the City of London.

This award was received in recognition of the work that Mick has been doing to develop and grow the positive employee culture at Datactics and build strong employee engagement. It follows on from Datactics securing “Accredited” status with Investors in People in 2019, beginning its journey as a firm recognised for commitment to its people, and winning the best company for Diversity and Inclusion at the Women in Technology and Data Awards 2020.

To be further recognised for this commitment at the SITC award ceremony was an honour and a real testament to the approach Mick has taken as Datactics continues to grow rapidly.

Mick Foster said:

“We have had a very strong company culture at Datactics, which we’ve worked hard to build on as the company has more than doubled in size in the last two years, to nearly 50 staff. I’m really pleased that this award has been given to us as it demonstrates that when our people go to work on projects for firms in the City of London, they carry that culture with them.”

Matt Flenley, Marketing Manager, said

“We’d like to thank all at Goodacre for the work they did in pulling together a virtual event and awards ceremony. It was great to see all the award winners, and to see and hear Mick’s name being announced was a brilliant confirmation that what we’re doing to grow our company culture is being recognised in the industry. “

The Systems in The City Financial Technology Award Winners were announced on Thursday 10th September by Sky Sports News Presenter Hayley McQueen during an online presentation. Congratulations to the other 2020 Winners!

Last week, as part of the Datactics Focus on Awards week, I posted that we had won the Best Company for Diversity and Inclusion at the Women in Technology and Data Awards 2020.

I thought I’d take a little time to go into a bit more detail behind what made us stand out, and how proud we are to be this year’s winners.

On pure numbers alone, the number of women employed within our company had risen to over 40% by the close of last year, something that goes against industry norms.

Our AI team, which is headed up by Dr. Fiona Browne, is also made up of a majority-female team with ¾ of the team being female. Diversity to us, as a company, is very important and we believe that diversity and inclusion are two of the biggest contributors behind our talented team.

In an article on the award by Waters Technology our CEO Stuart Harvey said:

At Datactics, we consider ourselves to be very inclusive and diverse and believe this is borne out both by the make-up of our workforce and also how we conduct ourselves in day-to-day business.

diversity and inclusion

We also pride ourselves on having individuals within our company that are at different stages in their careers. For example, we have two new graduates as well as interns within the company from the AI team, to HR, to marketing. I spoke to our Head of AI, Dr. Fiona Browne, who shared:

We really enjoy nurturing and developing talent. For example, we have one lady who is at the start of her career, having joined us with a Master’s in Mathematics and who joined us from a placement. She is already working on projects on our critical development path in AI and writing research papers for publication in industry journals.

We are also proud to have 13 different nationalities within the workforce. ‘International Food Days’ flourished as team members decided to proudly share their national delicious food. This began as Tania and Rui shared their experience in previous roles and the initiative then commenced as Daiva began by treating everyone to a Lithuanian Day which followed by a Portuguese Day; a German Day; Swedish Day; Irish Day; Chinese, and then Northern Irish.

Within the company, we celebrate the different nationalities we have welcomed in Northern Ireland and the fact that this initiative was prompted by team members in non-managerial roles just goes to show the freedom within the company to organise and establish new initiatives without blockers or strict formalities.

The team felt confident to bring an idea to life, with no fear that anyone would question it or stop them – which is a testament to the culture we have built.

At the moment, due to Covid-19, we are having virtual pub quizzes and it is not only a brilliant way to bring the team together but it is quite extraordinary in a pub quiz to have sometimes as many as 13 different nationalities within the quiz. Our very own Daiva lives in Lithuania but never fails to tune in and is a frequent host of the quiz.

It’s a brilliant way to keep united despite the distance.

Here at Datactics, we also seek to offer flexible working for our employees that may have a larger commute or may have a preference to work more flexibly. Our Head of AI, Dr. Fiona Browne has a large commute due to living just outside of Belfast. To make her schedule more manageable in terms of her family-life/work-life balance, she works one day a week from home. When we asked Dr. Browne how helpful this flexibility was, she said

It enables me to have increased flexibility in terms of family-life and travel

We have team members that, on a more permanent basis, are based remotely too, such as the team members based in Milan. However, we can maintain strong relations through our company’s emphasis on conference calls and meetings. During the COVID-19 situation, we have sought to maintain regular contact through utilising team collaboration digital tools to ensure that team members are connected despite maybe being a larger distance away.

When I spoke with Daire, who was previously a placement student, and asked what her experience had been like, now that she is in a full-time position, she reiterated that the company has always sought to promote diversity and inclusion and that she was thrilled to be beginning her graduate career in a company such as Datactics.

For myself, the diversity and variety of skills and culture within the company is a big part of what drew me to the company. It’s great to be part of such a diverse and inclusive work environment and I’m really looking forward to whatever comes next.

BELFAST BUSINESS RECEIVES BOARD OF TRADE AWARD FOR EXPORTING SUCCESS

Belfast-based software company Datactics presented with Board of Trade Award (BOFTA) for exceptional performance in international trade.

  • The BOFTAs celebrate businesses that are bringing innovation and prosperity to the UK and contributing to international trade
  • In 2018, exports from Northern Ireland were worth £8.9 billion, up 1.9% from the previous year

Belfast data software company Datactics was presented with a Board of Trade Award (BOFTA) by International Trade Secretary Dr Liam Fox MP last Thursday (16 May 2019) in recognition of their exporting success.

Datactics provides regulatory technology solutions for the banking and financial services sector. These enable financial institutions to comply with regulatory requirements associated with managing and reporting of large quantities of data.

The company has ambitious growth plans for Europe and the USA and revenues forecast to grow by around 50% this year.

Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade, The Rt Hon Dr Liam Fox MP, said:

“I was delighted to present Datactics with a BOFTA last week. The company is contributing to a stronger economy not just for Belfast and Northern Ireland, but for the UK as a whole.

My international economic department is committed to supporting more businesses in Northern Ireland to expand and sell overseas. Last year alone we provided £33 million of UK Export Finance support to exporters from Northern Ireland, which has already resulted in more than £46 million worth of overseas sales.”

The BOFTAs celebrate businesses who are championing free trade through exporting, bringing investment into the UK or demonstrating an innovative approach to entering international markets. Datactics received a BOFTA as the Board of Trade visited Northern Ireland for the first time in its almost 400 year history.

Head of Marketing at Datactics, Matt Flenley, said:

“We are thrilled to receive this award as we grow our business internationally. In any given week we could have people working on client projects in Reykjavik, New York, Amsterdam or London, all linking in with our home in Belfast as we spread the word on the high quality of the Northern Irish tech scene.

That the Department for International Trade has seen fit to present us with this award is a genuine encouragement to us to continue our efforts in expanding our company, equipping business teams at banks and data firms with our precision data quality and matching tools.”

During the awards, Dr Fox also urged Northern Ireland businesses to become Export Advocates and to provide advice, encouragement and support to other companies looking to sell their products and services overseas.

The Export Advocate community is a network of UK companies acting as ambassadors for exporting, sharing their success stories, offering practical advice and leading by example. They can be contacted via great.gov.uk and on the Exporting is GREAT Facebook group. Businesses in Northern Ireland can sign up to become Export Advocates via great.gov.uk/community.

Manufacturing Northern Ireland CEO Stephen Kelly was also appointed to the Board of Trade last week to be the ‘eyes and ears’ of the modern business community, ensuring that the benefits of free trade are spread equally across the UK. He joins the existing 22 advisers, drawn from a cross-section of business, industry and nations of the UK.
