The previous two editions of this blog series provided an overview of the Gartner Magic Quadrant from the perspective of someone relatively new to the world of data management, defining what it really means for a scaling business like Datactics to be recognised by Gartner, as well as drawing attention to the core strengths of the Datactics product, as highlighted by Gartner analysts. With this knowledge, this blog will focus on the key insights we derived from this research, also highlighting market trends from the buyer and seller side.

The data quality solutions market continues to mature at a rapid pace, with vendors from across the space innovating their offerings by making more impactful use of metadata and AI to solve customer problems and cater for increasingly complex use cases.

Data Quality had traditionally been mandated to adhere to regulatory compliance and governance requirements and reduce operational risks and costs. However, as referenced in Gartner’s research, senior executives in businesses across the globe are recognising the necessity for Data Quality when amplifying analytics for more accurate insights and data driven decision-making.

As per Gartner surveys, by the year 2023 it is estimated that over 60% of organisations will leverage machine-learning enabled data quality technology to increase automation of tasks and provide accurate recommendations, significantly reducing bottlenecks and manual effort often associated with tasks for Data Quality improvement. Additionally, by 2024, over 50% of businesses will implement modern Data Quality solutions to better support enterprise-wide digital transformation and business initiatives. Firms are engaging with vendors from the Magic Quadrant to gain competitive advantage and ultimately achieve their goals.

One of the key trends taken from this year’s Magic Quadrant is the shift towards Self-Service Data Quality. The era of requiring heavy programming and IT resources to perform Data Quality tasks is changing, and no-code platforms will continue to rise due to their accessibility and usability. Datactics were the only vendor in this year’s Magic Quadrant accredited with this feature as a key strength, as they continue to champion the movement of no-code functionality in Data Quality. Additionally, firms are seeking to centralise Data Quality controls and improve interoperability by simplifying the ease of integration with adjacent software tools such as MDM, metadata and data governance.

This research indicates that to fulfil the market demand for simplified data quality management, despite the increasingly complicated data landscape, vendors must offer a product that goes beyond simply fixing data errors, to helps clients actively manage their data right across the enterprise.

In the previous edition of this series, we explored the Gartner Magic Quadrant from the perspective of a newcomer to the data management industry. We defined what the Magic Quadrant really is, what it means for an aspiring scale-up like Datactics to be recognised by Gartner, as well as highlighting the critical capabilities and criteria that analysts use to qualify and position vendors in the quadrant. This blog will examine the specific feedback that Gartner analysts provided for Datactics, highlighting the core strengths of the platform and the reasons why we were recognised as a Niche Player in the Data Quality Solutions market.

Gartner assert that augmented data quality powered by metadata and AI, is a key dynamic driving the data quality solutions market. This was recognised as one of the key strengths of the Datactics platform; our AI Server contains a diverse range of AI functionalities, including prebuilt models for entity resolution, ML-based matching and outlier detection. These innovations significantly reduce manual effort and increase accuracy of results, whilst maintaining transparency and some degree of human intervention.

One of the compelling differences between Datactics and other vendors in the quadrant, as detailed in the Gartner Peer Insights forum, is our platform’s ease of use and implementation. Reviewers praised Datactics for their sophisticated and user-friendly workflow which requires minimal consulting services to implement and configure. It is a no-code platform that requires no programming experience to become proficient in rule development and management, reducing reliance on IT resources. Analysts also noted the ability of the Datactics platform to seamlessly integrate with third-party services for quick and easy connection.

In conjunction with this, Gartner analysts noted Datactics’ Self-Service approach to data quality. Our platform addresses the increasing industry demand for business-led data management initiatives, accommodating non-technical users to become skilled and accomplished with the tool. Datactics was the only vendor in the quadrant recognised for this attribute, exemplifying why we are displacing industry giants in some environments.

Additionally, Gartner also commented on Datactics’ current rate of market visibility, growth and vertical focus. Datactics is scaling rapidly, having reached 60 staff in 2021 and with a long-term goal to be the data quality tool of choice across a range of industries and geographical locations. In 2022, we expect to have feet on the ground in the APAC and North American markets and continue to have conversations with sectors outside of financial services and government.

The final instalment of this series will focus on some of the key findings and insights that we took from the Magic Quadrant, as well as highlighting key trends that Gartner have predicted for the future of the data quality solutions market.

Hot on the heels of Datactics’ recent announcement concerning new funding from Invest Northern Ireland, Matt Flenley, Head of Marketing, writes about the company’s exciting plans for expansion.

We were delighted to share the news from Invest NI, as it demonstrates both their commitment to home-grown tech companies and our own story of business success. The latter comes from the kinds of client we’ve been working with over the last few years – major international blue-chip organisations, some of the biggest firms in financial services and information management, and with a cornerstone programme for policing in the UK, NDQIS.

All of this has been secured through the hard work and energy of 60 talented and innovative people, getting the firm from a small 15-person office behind Victoria Square when I joined in 2017, to its current HQ near Belfast’s iconic Waterfront Hall. The new roles we’re now advertising, supported by Invest NI, are designed to keep the foot down on that growth story, take us to the next stage and deliver even more to our loyal clients.

The variety of technical and client-facing roles should appeal to a wide range of people. We’ve always said we want to work with great people, and if potential employees are reading this, thinking they might well be passionate about a career in data, they should absolutely get in touch with us. On our website can be found stories from a number of our team, spanning technology, delivery, project management, and more, which should help encourage people to take the plunge and explore a career with Datactics.

You can check out the brand new, exciting roles here.

We are investing £2.3 million into the business, through Research and Development (R&D), skills development, and the creation of 18 jobs.

We are pleased to announce this investment today and that Datactics has been selected as a Platinum Partner for R&D by Invest Northern Ireland. Our Machine Learning Group led by Fiona Browne spends its time looking at the practical applications of Machine Learning in relation to data preparation, data quality, and matching. Our aim is to uncover real-world business benefits of this exciting technology that will reduce the manual effort in improving data quality and increase accuracy with regards to matching which we then make available to our RegTech, FinTech, and GovTech clients via the Datactics platform.

At Datactics, we have incredibly strong senior leaders, managers and team leads. A few of them wanted to share their thoughts on the brilliant news:

“Invest Northern Ireland’s ongoing support has been fundamental in helping us get to where we are today. The R&D project will use ML to develop new analytics functionalities for our Datactics Data Quality platform. Invest NI’s in-market teams have given us great advice on how to expand in GB and the US, and to enter new markets like Japan and Singapore. By creating 18 jobs, investing in technical, digital and sales skills, and with our new Data Academy for graduates, we will be able to expand our team’s capacity and expertise to secure new sales in these markets.”

Stuart Harvey, CEO

“Businesses thrive with AI. It can automate financial forecasting, giving them greater visibility of their future finances and in turn empowering business owners to make better decisions and take actions to achieve their ultimate goals. At Datactics we are proud to be augmenting our data quality platform with fully explainable AI and Machine Learning, removing the risk of being unable to tell why a model has behaved in a particular way. Research and Development by Datactics echoes strongly with Gartner’s view of an augmented data quality future, something we’re seeing more demand for from our clients – whether for example in AI-powered entity matching, or in the inferring of data quality rules in intelligent data discovery.”

Dr. Fiona Browne, Head of Sofware Development and Machine Learning

“Working with Invest NI to support our business ambitions helps us to accelerate our development, recruit additional key people, and play our part in an ever-expanding Northern Ireland tech ecosystem. Securing funding is just one way in which Invest NI is benefitting our fast-growing business.”

David Steele, Head of Finance

“We’re very excited about the prospect of our forthcoming Data Academy, one of the initiatives being supported by this funding from Invest Northern Ireland. Belfast is seeing strong growth in the tech jobs market, and Datactics’ partners in the universities and further education colleges are helping us to secure talented people who are well-aligned to our company values of Ambition, Passion, and Integrity”.

Belfast, London, New York, Tokyo, 30th March 2021

Datactics is delighted to announce that it has secured a further accolade for the quality of its technology, this time from Bloor Research.

Datactics Self-Service Data Quality (SSDQ) has been awarded the Platinum Mutable Award in the 2021 Report. The award recognises software vendors that enable their clients to deal with data management processes in an intelligent and business-focused way.

Daniel Howard, Senior Analyst (Information Management and DevOps) with Bloor Research said:

“Datactics is a self-service data quality platform that puts significant stock in, and devotes substantial functionality to, the idea of explainable AI and machine learning. As fervent proponents of explainability in AI, we certainly approve.”

Explaining the typical client use case for its technology and services Datactics CEO (Stuart Harvey) said:

SSDQ allows client subject matter experts to measure, identify and fix data for themselves rather than being reliant on already over-stretched IT teams. As a data quality engine, Datactics co-exists with data governance tools relating to lineage and meta-data. Belfast, London, New York, Tokyo, 10th March 2021

Datactics is delighted to welcome its two latest recruits, appointed as part of the Graduate to Export programme.

Run by Invest NI, the #GradToExport programme allows graduates to apply for an 18-month programme, part funded by Invest NI, to gain international export experience.

The programme sees graduates start working locally in Northern Ireland for 6 months, getting to know the business and gaining invaluable knowledge into the strategic direction of the business.

The final 12 months of the programme will be spent on placement in the company’s export market, identifying a specific market research project that is aligned to the company’s strategic marketing plan.

Alongside gaining international experience and introducing a local product to a new market, both of the new appointees will be completing a part-time, fully-funded postgraduate diploma in International Marketing, accredited by Ulster University and the Institute of Export.

Following an extensive recruitment process with very high-calibre interviewees, Datactics appointed Brendan McCarthy and Michael Lynch to the two roles earlier this month. Their work will focus on banking, insurance and wealth management, with Michael due to spend his time in market exploring opportunities in Japan and Brendan heading Stateside to help support our clients and grow the business in New York. It is hoped that market restrictions will ease so that the graduates will get to spend as much time in the market as possible.

This exciting programme affords rapid-growth companies like Datactics further support in international markets and explore opportunities such as in-market data management partnerships.

Stuart Harvey, CEO at Datactics stated:

We are pleased to work with the Graduate to Export programme. Datactics has shown strong international growth in the last three years and we hope that having Brendan and Michael in-market will accelerate that during 2022.

Steve Harper, Invest NI’s Executive Director of International Trade said:

We are pleased to be able to support the growth of local talent through the second year of our Graduate to Export Programme. Northern Ireland businesses will have the opportunity to utilise the expertise of a local graduate to do extensive research in advance of targeting new markets, with the ultimate aim of increasing their exports.

Graduates will bring a fresh perspective and be able to maximise the skills they have gained in the course of their degree. They will also benefit from the international business experience and academic mentoring from Ulster University and the Institute of Export and International Trade. It really is a win-win for both.

All at Datactics would like to wish the very best of luck to both Brendan and Michael, with this new, exciting adventure!

weekly roundup featuring Global InsurTech Summit

It’s Friday…this week was a phenomenally busy one!

We attended the Global InsurTech Summit 2021, which took place this week from Tuesday to Thursday.

Throughout the 3-day summit, we got to engage with many keynotes, talks and presentations delivered and hosted by experts within the InsurTech industry. It was interesting to unpack what the pain points are within the industry and how processes are changing.

The virtual summit began with an outlook for insurance technology, followed by presentations on top technologies disrupting the insurance industry, innovations in insurance, and then an exploration into customer expectations.

Global InsurTech Summit

On that point, anyone wanting to learn about Datactics’ capabilities within the insurance market feel free to get in touch with Kieran Buchanan.

He will be more than happy to explore how we can be of assistance with our award-winning technology especially in the areas of Data Quality and Matching. One key takeaway of the summit was that “Data quality is imperative within the insurance world, with an increase in fraud across the industry, a shift towards prioritising the end customers’ needs and carriers being forced to reimagine business processes.” We at Datactics provide the technology and the know-how to help bring full confidence to your data quality. Datactics won the Data Quality Analysis Tool award from A-Team Group for the second year running in 2020, adding three major Tier 1 financial clients in New York, Amsterdam and London last year.

3 ideas to get your people excited about your data!

This week we also have released a new blog post entitled ‘3 ideas to get your people excited about your data’. We found a great stat that 59 zetabytes of data has been captured, created, copied and consumed worldwide since 2010 (according to Statista) and as result it’s easy to see the problems that arise when even a fraction of that data is incorrect. We curated a blog post designed to help energise, excite and encourage your data people in not one, not two but three ways that are highly easy-to-implement and are guaranteed to help deliver your next data management programme (and truly change your data culture). The tips we established are:

  1. You don’t need to rip and replace your expensive data stack
  2. Boil a kettle, not an ocean
  3. Unleash the power of a fully self-service system

Do you want to read more and find out exactly what we mean? Read our full blog post here

If you would like to continue on the thought thread of rethinking your data quality and make a huge difference to your organisation, you can reach out to the author of this blog post, Matt Flenley on LinkedIn. He would be delighted to continue this conversation.

To learn more about how how Self-Service Data Quality is the best approach to developing a next-gen data management strategy, check out our webinar from 2020 with key input from CTO, Alex Brown (or read a blog post version here).

A Trip down memory lane: Video Game Edition

We thought we would wrap up this blog post with a bit of nostalgia. We recently asked our entire team to name a video game that reminded them of their youth! We received a plethora of responses… with some solid favourites. We would love to get your involved in our DatacticsChat, tell us, what was your favourite video game when you were younger? Will you admit to playing it, or can you even remember it?!

Belfast, London, New York, 8th February 2021

Belfast-based Regtech company Datactics, a leading data quality software provider to global financial services firms, has been selected by the UK Government’s Department for International Trade (DIT) to showcase the best in British innovation during a US roadshow.

Roadshow

The DIT’s RegTech Roadshow takes place virtually 22-26 February 2021.

It will provide ten innovative UK-based regulatory technology companies with the opportunity to meet industry stakeholders, regulators and potential partners. They will also receive guidance and training from DIT partners on how to set up and grow a physical presence and hear from experts on the key challenges facing the US market and how their technology can help solve them.

Datactics was selected following a highly competitive recruitment process. To qualify for the roadshow, each company had to meet the following criteria set by DIT: 10 or more employees, a minimum annual turnover of £1 million, an enterprise-ready solution, and an existing base of clients in the UK and US markets. The companies selected have all achieved great success both domestically and globally, cultivating a strong international client base and achieving a reputation of excellence in helping revolutionize the way the financial services industry manage risk, compliance, and regulatory change. The cohort represents diversity and female leadership within the UK industry, with each firm offering a unique and innovative solution that is revolutionizing regulation compliance and all the companies combined service nearly every Tier 1 and Tier 2 financial institution.

Kunal Khatri, Director for DIT North America, said:

The UK has been at the heart of the global financial services innovation for decades, and in 2021 we will continue to lead the global FinTech and RegTech revolution. We’re excited to showcase the talent and expertise that UK companies have to offer. This roadshow is a great opportunity to deepen our bilateral engagement on financial services with the US and encourage private sector collaboration to make the world a safer, easier, and more equitable place to do business.

Commenting on the selection, Stuart Harvey, Datactics CEO, said:

This is a great opportunity for Datactics to showcase our best-in-breed data quality and matching solutions to the US financial market. We have proven success in the UK and Europe and already work with clients in the US. We are looking forward to helping financial institutions transform their data-driven business, manage risk and regulatory compliance.

The UK leads in the field of regulatory innovation thanks to its high concentration of financial services firms and the institution of the Financial Conduct Authority’s regulatory sandbox. British RegTechs are well-positioned to add value and help revolutionise the way US companies approach compliance.

In addition to the 10 companies, DIT is excited to welcome media partners and advisers who helped to develop the program, including the A-Team Group’s RegTech Insights, and the COMPLY Conference, host of one of the largest RegTech industry events in the US.

collaboration, community, marketing

In January 2021, our very own Marketing Manager, Matt Flenley spoke to Georgia Halston of Halston Marketing, to unpack the power of collaboration and community. In this piece, Matt discusses the recent triumphs and the strategies that he deems as critical to remaining resilient, and relevant to both existing and new customers throughout 2021 and beyond.

I think the biggest thing we’ve noticed is a renewed focus on communication. This goes for how we’ve communicated and collaborated internally as a team, and how we’ve been keeping in touch with our community, customers, partners, and those lovely people who are almost customers but not quite yet!

Keep in touch meetings were born!

Keeping in touch is quite a good phrase for this, actually, as we’ve had a stronger cross-company set of conversations over Zoom, branded as “Keep in Touch”, ensuring the whole team are aligned on business priorities from the newest team member to the CEO. These have been genuinely collaborative and supportive, making the internal marketing journey equally as important as the external one. We’ve worked hard on internal branding of newsletters, too, to help people feel more connected and involved.

Communication is vital

Of course, for a tech company usually spending its time across the northern hemisphere, actually being in countries has been made impossible since March of last year. We’d usually have people on the ground in New York one week, and Amsterdam the next, and so we’ve been talking to our event partners about how we can redistribute physical event spend into digital and virtual opportunities instead. Again, communication has been key here, looking to come up with mutually beneficial ways of keeping pre-Covid sponsorship monies assigned to events but ensuring that they return what we need in terms of market visibility, thought leadership, and lead generation.

Check out this virtual keynote delivered by Kieran Seaward, our Head of Sales, when previously we’d have settled for just an exhibition stand.

Sustaining economic growth is crucial

In the same spirit we reached out to local event companies to offer our help in coordinating segments of agendas and bringing along people we knew could help build their audiences through keynote appearances, for example, contributing to AI Con 2020. We recognise that it’s a really challenging time to be working, but ultimately it’s about getting there together and sustaining economic growth through collaboration, and all of that can be kicked off with an email or a phone call to ask “how can we help both of us to get what we want?”

What have we, at Datactics, been doing at a community level?

At a community level, we have had a long-standing relationship with Rosetta Primary School, a half-hour’s walk up the road from us here in Belfast. We’d usually go in and help with one-to-one reading, or developing numeracy and relational language through play with Lego, but clearly that had to change for the Autumn term 2020.

Instead, we used our volunteer time in the Marketing team, working with the school to develop an online Nativity which premiered just before the Christmas holidays; one of our team, who is part-way through his final year of a Marketing degree, also put together a virtual tour of the school to help them with their admissions for 2021.

These have been fulfilling projects that have helped with morale just as much as they’ve supported practical needs in the community.

Video, podcasts, keynotes? All and more!

Lastly, we’ve said “yes please!” to an increasing number of opportunities to do video, podcast, keynotes – you name it. Our brand has grown significantly as our team has made themselves available for these opportunities, often at short notice, for example Dr. Fiona Browne, Head of AI’s contribution to an episode of FinTech Finance focussed on AML and tech.

Training, training, training

I say lastly – but alongside all of this, we’ve been working increasingly closely with our Sales team to better integrate all our campaign activity. We’ve taken on some external training on this front and not just assumed we can do it all ourselves! Sometimes you need someone else to hold your feet to the fire to really make critical business-growing decisions and grow.

Thanks again to Halston Marketing for reaching out to us – we have thoroughly enjoyed engaging with the wonderful team. We don’t want this conversation to stop here, so if you’d like to reach out to Matt Flenley to hear about all things marketing, our partnerships, or what Datactics can do for you, connect with him on LinkedIn.

Datactics Round up

Welcome back to our round up. We thought we would take a bit of time to update you on what we have achieved and some important news about being accepted onto Government purchasing frameworks.

The first of which is G-Cloud. This framework enables suppliers of cloud-based solutions to be made available through a front-end catalogue called the Digital Marketplace.

In this round up, we are delighted that Datactics has once again maintained its place in the G-Cloud framework, alongside other highly prolific companies who are selling or thinking about selling their cloud-based solutions to the UK Government.

G-Cloud, Datactics, G-Cloud Supplier

Secondly, we have been included onto the Digital Outcomes and Specialist Framework, which sits alongside G-Cloud on the Digital Marketplace.

The DOS framework is for the procurement of digital teams or individuals, often alongside in-house delivery teams.  There are many benefits to being a supplier on this framework as DOS provides another route to market for suppliers looking to support digital transformation programmes across the whole of the public sector.

Thirdly, Datactics has achieved the Cyber Essentials certification.

Cyber Essentials Certification, Certified, Cyber Security

Cyber Essentials is a UK Government-backed scheme that aims to assist organisations with assessing and mitigating risks from common cybersecurity threats to their IT systems.

We are proud to have achieved this certification, as it demonstrates our commitment to helping identify security controls for an organisation to have in place with their IT systems.

The badge will ensure better identification of potential risks, that will help protect us against common cyber threats, illustrating how we have adopted the proper security controls to protect customer data and showcasing compliance with UK Government contracts. You can read more about it here and you can find us on the list of approved companies here.

Best Data Quality Analysis Tool
Matt Flenley, Marketing & Partnerships Manager, with DMI’s Award for Best Data Quality Analysis Tool

In other news, we also are delighted thatthe development and delivery work we’ve been doing on Self-Service Data Quality saw us selected as winners by the A-Team Group of their Best Data Quality Analysis Tool. Additionally, we ranked #17 in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Ireland, which highlights our innovation and rapid growth in the region.

These successes are an indicator of how much Datactics is growing. Our committed staff have worked hard to achieve these notable accolades. Particular thanks to those innovative folks who strive to put so many hours of development work into our Self-Service Data Quality platform. It has been a busy period, and certainly, 2021 has well and truly kicked off on a strong note!

Belfast, London, New York, 28th September 2020

We are delighted to announce the launch of our brand new website!

Our Marketing team has spent the summer working on a major revamp of the site, designed to make it easy for people to find information on our self-service data quality solutions, and the award-winning technology they’re built on.

From the homepage you can now easily access information on our work in improving data quality in financial services, and in government and policing. You can also find lots of the answers to questions we are most frequently asked when it comes to specifics about our technology.

Deeper into the site, in the Datablog, you can find cutting-edge thought leadership material. Featuring blogs from our technologists and practitioners, introductions to the team, and thoughts on the market, there’s plenty here to get stuck into! It’s worth bookmarking as we regularly update this content with articles, company announcements and client successes, and more about the fast-growing team here at Datactics.

CEO Stuart Harvey said,

“We are very pleased to present our new website with its theme – “Democratising Data Quality”. At Datactics we are passionate about this topic. It resonates with many recent client projects where we see that the best person to monitor and fix broken data is the owner of that data. Many of our clients are front-office business people who would love to do this, but don’t have the necessary internal IT resource to make it happen. We aim to share user stories of how to empower data owners who are not programmers to practically address the issue of improving data quality and matching in their businesses.”

We are delighted to formally announce that Mick Foster, COO at Datactics, has won the Employee Engagement award at the Goodacre Systems in the City Awards (SITC).

sitc

These annual awards reward the leading service and system suppliers to the regulated financial community, particularly in the City of London.

This award was received in recognition of the work that Mick has been doing to develop and grow the positive employee culture at Datactics and build strong employee engagement. It follows on from Datactics securing “Accredited” status with Investors in People in 2019, beginning its journey as a firm recognised for commitment to its people, and winning the best company for Diversity and Inclusion at the Women in Technology and Data Awards 2020.

To be further recognised for this commitment at the SITC award ceremony was an honour and a real testament to the approach Mick has taken as Datactics continues to grow rapidly.

Mick Foster said:

“We have had a very strong company culture at Datactics, which we’ve worked hard to build on as the company has more than doubled in size in the last two years, to nearly 50 staff. I’m really pleased that this award has been given to us as it demonstrates that when our people go to work on projects for firms in the City of London, they carry that culture with them.”

Matt Flenley, Marketing Manager, said

“We’d like to thank all at Goodacre for the work they did in pulling together a virtual event and awards ceremony. It was great to see all the award winners, and to see and hear Mick’s name being announced was a brilliant confirmation that what we’re doing to grow our company culture is being recognised in the industry. “

The Systems in The City Financial Technology Award Winners were announced on Thursday 10th September by Sky Sports News Presenter Hayley McQueen during an online presentation. Congratulations to the other 2020 Winners!
