Datactics started life as a Queen’s University spin-out in the early 2000s, but now, has grown into a fast-growing tech firm employing more than 60 staff and working with big name, global, blue chip clients – from financial services to media.

Datactics UK Government Department Case Study

 Datactics is partnering with a UK Government Department and national law enforcement agencies on a nationwide deployment of the Datactics’ data quality and matching platform for use in crime classification and reporting.

The main benefits of the system to date have been:

A reduction of manual processing and data preparation time. Increased accuracy of matching a crime report to the correct crime type, saving up to 90% of time spent manually reviewing data in crime records.

Back in the saddle for Datactics

We are now well over halfway through our Datactalympics and with 11 days to go till the end, it’s all to play for. The challenge has seen all the participants being split into 3 teams (named after our software platform components FlowDesigner, DQM, and DQC)… with the aim of the challenge to accumulate as much time undertaking a physical activity as possible. The challenge has been measured on duration so any and all sports have contributed to the different team totals.

We’ve had surfboarding, longboarding and sailing – as well as all the usual cheeky short walks to and from the carpark…

At the top of the leaderboard currently we have Sean McConnell with 37hrs 45mins accumulated, closely followed by Edele Copeland with 25hrs 40mins and Marcus (Mark Lamb) with 24hrs 9mins.

This morning, Stuart Harvey is racking up the miles cycling through London!

Finally getting our full team together for a Strategy filled morning session at the Europa Hotel

 On 5th August, the company got the chance to hold a strategy morning at Belfast’s most iconic hotel.

This gave us an opportunity to discuss business performance, technology roadmap, business goals, and taking the time to reflect on what the amazing team here has been able to achieve despite the past year and how unpredictable it has been.

It has been brilliant to have more of the team meeting together after 18 months.

Head of AI Fiona Browne contributed to Part 2 of the AI & Ethics podcast last week 

Fiona took a deeper dive into some really practical tips on translating ML principles into practice.

The key takeaways of the podcast included:

1) Regulation – Regulators are proposing a risk-based approach to AI regulation, focusing on the rights and safety of people and businesses

2) Responsibility – Ethical responsibility applies to everyone in an organisation, business or technical, and must not be a box-ticking exercise

3) The Data – Never underestimate the data! Build strong governance and security processes, and robust testing to flush out unintended bias

Meet Jackie Devine… Our Commerical Manager at Datactics

Ever since Jackie Devine has joined Datactics she has brought so much to the team with her experience and expertise. She has been actively involved in establishing a dedicated sales function for new GovTech business, supported the establishment of a partner network, and improved operational processes for qualifying, winning, and delivering IT services. 

Yesterday, at our Strategy day she led a brilliant session centred around reflecting on what we feel we like, what we have learned, what we lack, and what we long for. This left us with some clear takeaways we are going to put into practice right away.

Friday is here again! After a busy last 2 weeks, we are excited to tell you all our developments that have been happening over the past fortnight.

Datactics unveiled new dedicated Client Services hub

Last week we released press for the opening of our new office which marked the latest chapter in Datactics’ rapid growth story, following hot on the heels of our recent £2m investment round led by Par Equity. 

We were delighted Simon Hamilton, CEO of Belfast Chamber of Commerce, was in attendance to open our latest office. In 2016, we were a 10-strong software firm that had just moved out of the Titanic Quarter’s Science Park. Now numbering nearly 60 employees, we have experienced growth on strong financial performance, which has seen us rank as the 17th fastest growing tech firm in Deloitte Ireland’s Fast50 in 2020.

“Northern Ireland has become an internationally recognised FinTech and RegTech centre of excellence, and we are glad to be working together as a team and growing our staff numbers. We are seeing benefits for our clients and staff as we collaborate and share in the extended and more spacious office”, said Datactics CEO, Stuart Harvey.

Invest NI video has been released

Last year we put in applications for Invest Northern Ireland’s Graduate to Export programme because the prospect of getting someone on the ground in both APAC and NY came along at just the right time for how Datactics is growing.

Michael Lynch, Business Development Executive (APAC) and Matthew Flenley, Head of Marketing both discuss the programme in the below video from both the employee and the employer’s perspective.

They both did a stellar job.

Datactics unveils new dedicated Client Services hub!

Last week we officially opened our new office which marked the latest chapter in Datactics’ rapid growth story, following hot on the heels of our recent £2m investment round led by Par Equity. 

We were delighted Simon Hamilton, CEO of Belfast Chamber of Commerce, was in attendance to open our latest office at One Lanyon Quay, which saw us triple our office space in the landmark building. The new facility will house the tech firm’s Client Services arm supporting Datactics’ global customer base across financial services and the public sector.

Access to Finance: Ambition to Scale, Invest Northern Ireland contribution!

On the foot of having our own investment round… Stuart Harvey shared at Access to Finance: Ambition to Scale, Invest Northern Ireland on 24-25th June.

Stuart discussed:
“Who is your customer? What can you do for them? How do they buy your product? How do you make money? How do you define an MVP.” 

With an overarching theme of ‘Ambition’, these virtual conferences are targeted towards businesses seeking to scale and wish to find out more on how to obtain finance to achieve growth, through the experience of industry experts and local businesses. We were delighted to be involved.

Invest NI filming!

Invest Northern Ireland filming was taking place at Datactics HQ this week.

Invest NI will be following three of the Graduate to Export people who are going to various different markets. Over the next 18 months, Michael Lynch will be one of the individuals who will have his journey followed. Alongside Michael, is Matthew Flenley, Head of Marketing who will also be followed to gain insight into the journey from an employers perspective.

Michael will hopefully be jetting off to Japan in September to start 12 months based out in the market, with the aim to drive more business in the Japanese market. As his journey unfolds, a narration of his journey and learnings will be documented.

We attended the DIT North America Week!

We have enjoyed attending the Department for International Trade (DIT) North America Week taking place from the 21st-25th June.

This event allowed us to hear from businesses who have worked with DIT to grow their businesses in North America, as they shared both their successes and challenges.

Brendan McCarthy will travel to the United States later this year to represent Datactics in North America as part of Invest Northern Ireland‘s ‘Graduate to Export’ programme. His role will help Datactics drive international expansion plans by sourcing new business and potential partnerships within North America.

Matt Flenley, Head of Marketing took part in a panel discussion with Corinium Global Intelligence on the topics of data and analytics. Matt described it as a “Superb discussion on what helps and what hinders analytics in industry. It’s easy for us to say that everything’s built on quality data, but when it comes to analytics it really is!”.

We have been nominated in the Waters Rankings 2021, as voting closes today – a vote would be brilliant!

Each year, WatersTechnology.com ask their readers at investment banks, asset management firms, hedge funds, brokerages, and exchanges to choose their leading financial services solutions and technology providers. 

The results will be announced at a virtual awards ceremony on July 16. A win would be a really strong endorsement of the innovative approach we take to helping financial services firms along their Data Quality journey.

Shortlisted for 2 awards at Digital DNA Awards 2021!

We have been shortlisted for the Workplace of the year by Digital DNA.

The Workplace of the Year award recognises a company that has instilled an excellent workplace culture where employees are at the core of everything they do. We are proud to be shortlisted for this award as we have worked hard to ensure that we are people first and we fully embrace and celebrate the talent within our now 55 person team.

We are also so proud of our very own Daire McCotter, who is a Client Services Support Consultant at Datactics. She has been shortlisted as Young Person of the Year by Digital DNA HQ! 

The Young Person of the Year award recognises an individual under the age of 30, who is really disrupting the market through their radical innovation, energy, and endless creativity.

We are looking forward to attending on 1 July at the Ormeau Baths.

Systems in the City Financial Technology Awards 2021 nominations!

We are delighted that Datactics has been nominated for a company award with FinTech Awards 2021.

Alongside this, the first individuals to be nominated also have been announced, which includes Kieran Seaward, our Head of Sales.

Award winners will be announced and presented online by Gemma Claire (Godfrey) on 29 June following the Systems in the City Fintech Conference, chaired by Phillip Bungey.

Shortlisted for Diversity and Inclusion Award

We are delighted to be announced as finalists for the Diversity and Inclusion category at the UK FinTech Awards 2021. At Datactics, we pride ourselves on being inclusive and diverse, as we believe these are two of the biggest contributors behind our talented team.

This year there were over 300 entries who participated so we are thrilled to be shortlisted.

The awards ceremony will be taking place in London on 22nd July. 

We attended a US Branding workshop with GBBC

Last week we had the pleasure of joining a GBBC Workshop on the topic of ‘Branding your company in the US’. The session was led by Theobald Fox and centered around key tips for companies to consider in terms of branding and clarifying value proposition in relation to the US market. 

For Datactics, this event was particularly relevant as Datactics is seeking to further expand into the US Market. As part of Invest Northern Ireland’s ‘Graduate to Export’ programme, Brendan McCarthy will travel to the United States later this year to represent Datactics in the region. We attended this workshop to gain insight into US branding trends, ‘Marketing Must Do’s’, creating a US value proposition and messaging, and common pitfalls to avoid.

Brendan McCarthy speaks at recent DIT event 

Brendan McCarthy attended the Department for International Trade’s (DIT) ‘Landing a Successful Bank-FinTech Partnership in the US’  event which took place last week.  

As part of Invest Northern Ireland’s ‘Graduate to Export’ programme, Brendan will travel to the United States later this year to represent Datactics in the region.

Giro Datactica round-up! 4713km is complete and we have reached Milan

The Runners and Riders club started the challenge to help get people more active in the better weather of April, with the aim of reaching Milan, Helsinki and Vilnius (where some of our colleagues are based) in just 4 weeks. We managed to complete that challenge with some amazing distances being racked up by participants; aiming for 3,471km overall, we accumulated a combined total of 4713.58km.

Datactics receives £2m growth investment

The investment was led by Par Equity, an Edinburgh-based investment firm that recently said it had a record year for capital deployed, despite the pandemic. It focuses on early-stage investments.

Sales have grown strongly over the past twelve months and we have now won new clients in Amsterdam, New York, and London. The investment will be used to accelerate growth by allowing us to invest in sales resources focused on London and New York.

UK-Thailand Smart Cities launch!

This week marked the Trade Mission phase of the DIT Tech Export Academy. We were delighted to be meeting virtually with a number of potential clients and partners in Thailand throughout the course of this past week.

The evolution of Thai smart cities brings along a profusion of innovative technology. We had a great week contributing to the wider discussion of how we can use good quality data to inform, nourish and enhance the sustainable cities of the future.

The discussions illustrated the acumen of business professionals in the adaption of new technology and innovation at this time. This appears particularly evident in Thailand where there has been a rapid application of Smart City technology.

Round-up of the CDO and Data Leaders Global Summit 2021!

Last week Michael Lynch and a few other members of the team attended the EDM Council CDO and Data Leaders’ Global Summit.

Throughout the virtual summit, there were many discussions that took place on the theme of Leadership, Data, and Analytics for Digital Transformation. The summit was conducted with 90+ leaders in 30+ sessions – designed specifically for senior and C-level data and analytics executives.

Friday is upon us again! After a busy 2 weeks, this round-up we are excited to tell you all our developments that have been happening over the past fortnight.

Stuart Harvey took part in the National Strengths – Findexable Report Launch for UK FinTech week

The new Department for International Trade (DIT) report highlights the strengths of the diverse FinTech ecosystems across the UK and opportunities for growth.

Our CEO, Stuart Harvey took part in a panel discussion yesterday moderated by Simon Hardie, findexable. He shared alongside the fellow panelists how Datactics has and continues to expand in different regions.

Other companies that shared their insights included: Delio, Honcho, Modulr, tumelo and, Wealth Wizards. Thanks to the other speakers: Gareth Lewis, Myles Stephenson, Tony Vail, Gavin Sewell and, Georgia Stewart – was great to hear their stories! We are putting together a blog post currently which will unpack workplace trends, company growth, and the growing FinTech sphere of Northern Ireland.

I have been a developer for 3 years now with most of my previous experience being in C# and now I am venturing into the world of Java, which is all new to me. The first couple of months I will spend training and getting used to the business. I feel this role will give me a great opportunity to elevate my career within software and be able to develop my skill set whilst working alongside a stellar team…

I am really passionate about helping young people to understand mathematics and to showcase to them the wealth of opportunities in front of them!”

Top 100 Tech Companies of 2021 in NI

Datactics has been listed as one of the Digital DNA HQ top 100 Tech Companies of 2021 in Northern Ireland. The edition was compiled based on research carried out over the past 3 months. Selection criteria for the 2021 listing was based on the number of employees, length of time-based in Northern Ireland, and their sustained growth.
